Shimla, July 2,
Himachal Pradesh is preparing for intensified monsoon activity as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for several districts. The southwest monsoon is already active in six districts, and the state is anticipating further impacts as the weather system progresses.
Significant rainfall has been recorded across various parts of the state in the past 24 hours. Notable precipitation levels were observed in Kangra (75.6 mm), Malraon (65.0 mm), and Dharamshala (30.5 mm).
Bhunter experienced the highest maximum temperature at 36.6°C, while Kukumseri recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 12.4°C.
In Kangra district, the water level in Baner Khad rose suddenly after heavy rains, trapping six people. Five were from Uttar Pradesh, and one was a local youth. The fire department, led by Fire Officer Ashok Rana, promptly initiated a rescue operation and safely extricated all six individuals. Rana’s bravery has been widely praised.
At around 6:15 AM, approximately 150 people had descended to bathe in Baner Khad. The fire department office is nearby, and Rana noticed the rising water from his room. He immediately rushed to the ravine, warning bathers to exit. However, six individuals on a stone in the middle got trapped as the water flow increased.
Rana contacted one of the trapped individuals via mobile, advising them to stay calm. Using a rope and life jacket, Rana led a risky two-hour rescue operation, saving Sumit Kumar, Sunil Kumar, Ram Jagat, Luv-Kush, and Dharamveer Singh from Uttar Pradesh, along with local youth Rahul. SDM Ishant Jaswal also arrived at the scene.
The synoptic features indicate that the Northern Limit of Monsoon continues to pass through Jaisalmer, Sirsa, Kurukshetra, and Ludhiana. Conditions remain favorable for the southwest monsoon to advance into the remaining parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab over the next two to three days.
The IMD has highlighted a cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan, expected to influence the weather in Himachal Pradesh and contribute to further rainfall.
The forecast for the coming days suggests fairly widespread to widespread showers across the region, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall likely, particularly in the districts under Orange Alert. Thunderstorms with lightning pose additional risks.
Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather reports and follow safety measures. The IMD’s forecast and warnings indicate a period of heightened weather activity, with potential for localized flooding and disruptions. Authorities have urged people to remain cautious, especially in areas prone to landslides and flash floods.
Tourist resorts are experiencing drizzling and chilly conditions, draped in thick misty fogs.
