Shimla, Mar 25,
In a harrowing incident on Sunday, an avalanche struck a bus belonging to the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC)’s Keylong depot near Teling Nala along the Keylong-Manali road. The incident occurred as the bus, en route from Keylong to Kullu, was halted amidst heavy tourist traffic between Sissu and Atal Tunnel Rohtang due to road congestion caused by clear weather conditions.
The impact of the avalanche shattered the window panes of the bus, triggering chaos among the passengers as they narrowly escaped harm. Fortunately, all 17 passengers on board managed to evacuate the bus safely, averting potential loss of life and property.
According to bus conductor Manish Kumar, the bus had been stranded between snow walls for one and a half hours prior to the avalanche. Prompt action by Border Roads Organisation (BRO) personnel facilitated the removal of the avalanche debris, allowing the bus to resume its journey to Kullu.
Radha Devi, Regional Manager of HRTC Keylong Depot, confirmed the safety of all passengers, while Lahaul-Spiti Superintendent of Police Mayank Chaudhary urged caution among travelers in light of unpredictable natural occurrences.
Shubham, a Junior Engineer with the Border Roads Organisation stationed in Sissu, coordinated the swift response to the avalanche, dispatching machinery and workers to clear the obstruction promptly.
Meanwhile, Atal Tunnel Rohtang, a vital passage for vehicular traffic, has been fully restored for all vehicles following initial restrictions for four by four vehicles due to snow. The tunnel’s reopening has facilitated the smooth flow of tourists and vehicles through the region.
As travelers continue to navigate through mountainous terrain, authorities emphasize the importance of vigilance and preparedness to mitigate risks posed by natural phenomena.
