Noteworthy that unlike the direct popular vote system used in general elections, Rajya Sabha members from Himachal Pradesh are elected by the elected members of the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly. This indirect form of representation underscores the intricate interplay between State and National politics.
Pertinent to mention that Himachal has two Rajya sabha seats. This elections to 56 Rajya Sabha seats are scheduled across 15 states, of which Himachal Pradesh is one. The hill State will elect one Rajya Sabha member as the tenure of BJP president J.P.Nadda is ending this April. Out of the 68 member assembly the INC has 40 MLAs . On the other hand opposition BJP has 26 MLAs in the house.
Though both parties are yet to announce their plans, but speculations are that senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra may be the INC candidate for this seat.
