Priyanka Gandhi Vadra may replace JP Nadda on RS seat from Himachal
Shimla, Jan 30,
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is poised to potentially replace BJP President Jagat Parkash Nadda in the Rajya Sabha from Himachal Pradesh. Out of 54 Rajya Sabha seats announced by the Election Commission in 15 states, one belongs to BJP President Jagat Parkash Nadda, completing his six-year term in April.
Experts suggest that despite BJP’s presence in Himachal Pradesh (26 seats in State assembly), Congress appears confident in challenging the seat. The state, with 73 lakh population, has four Lok Sabha and three Rajya Sabha seats, with 68 members in the Assembly.
Moreover, here it is pertinent to inform that given the scheduled Lok Sabha elections in May, speculation is rife that instead of sending Jagat Parkash Nadda to the Rajya Sabha from states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, or Madhya Pradesh, BJP may field him from Kangra or Hamirpur Lok Sabha seats.
Currently, the BJP appears cautious about announcing Lok Sabha candidates, particularly for the Kangra and Hamirpur seats.
In contrast, Congress is contemplating fielding Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Anand Sharma for the Rajya Sabha, while considering various candidates like Vinod Sultanpuri, Dr. Col Dhani Ram Shandill from Shimla and Ram Lal Thakur, Rajinder Rana, or Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri from Hamirpur. Chander Kumar or Sudhir Kumar from Kangra, Pratibha Kumari or Vikramaditya Singh from Mandi parliamentary.
Political observers anticipate a competitive contest, suggesting a fifty-fifty chance for both Congress and BJP in the Lok Sabha elections. While Congress holds strongholds in Mandi and Shimla, BJP dominates the Hamirpur and Kangra parliamentary constituencies.
In the 2022 Assembly elections, Congress made significant inroads, challenging BJP in the home turf of JP Nadda, Anurag Thakur, and Shanta Kumar in Kangra parliamentary. On the other hand barring tribal seats and couple of assembly seats in Kullu, Kinnaur and Lahaul Spiti BJP won most of seats in Mandi Paraliamentary.
