Shimla, May 10,
All flight operations to and from Shimla, Kullu-Manali, and Kangra airports have been suspended until May 15, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) confirmed on Friday. The flight ban comes as part of heightened nationwide security measures under Operation Sindoor, which has led to the temporary closure of 24 airports across North, West, and Central India.
Along with Himachal Pradesh airports, those in Chandigarh, Amritsar, Jammu, Leh, Srinagar, Ludhiana, and Bhatinda are also affected by the shutdown. Authorities have cited increased security alerts as the reason behind the decision, aimed at ensuring the safety of passengers and safeguarding Indian airspace.
The suspension has disrupted travel plans for many, especially tourists and residents relying on air connectivity to Himachal Pradesh’s hill districts. Local hospitality and tourism sectors, already gearing up for the peak summer season, have also expressed concern over the extended disruption.
Meanwhile, passengers flying from operational airports have been advised to prepare for tighter security procedures. The AAI has issued new rules requiring passengers to reach the airport at least three hours before departure. Check-in counters will now close 75 minutes before the scheduled flight, and an additional baggage check will be conducted just before boarding. These measures are expected to lead to delays.
The AAI has urged passengers not to travel to suspended airports and instead contact their respective airlines for the latest flight status, rescheduling options, and refunds. “We understand the inconvenience caused, but these steps are necessary in the interest of public safety,” said a senior AAI official.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and have assured that efforts are underway to restore normal flight services as early as possible. Travellers are advised to stay updated through official airline communications and government announcements.
