The IMD attributes the expected wet conditions to active southwest monsoon currents coupled with upper air cyclonic circulations influencing the northwestern Himalayan region. Low, mid, and adjoining high hill areas may receive significant rainfall during this period.
An Orange Alert has been sounded for June 29 across Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Sirmaur, Solan, and Mandi districts due to the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall.
Meanwhile, a Yellow Alert remains in place for various days during the forecast period in districts like Shimla, Kullu, Chamba, and others, highlighting the possibility of isolated heavy showers and thunderstorms.
Additionally, on June 27 and 28, a Yellow Alert is in effect for Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Solan, Shimla, Mandi, and Sirmaur. The department has further extended a Yellow Alert from June 30 to July 3 for Shimla, Solan, Mandi, and nearby districts.
The Hydromet Division of IMD has also flagged a low to moderate flash flood risk in Shimla and Sirmaur districts, valid till 11:30 AM on June 28. Saturated soils and low-lying terrain may witness surface runoff and localized flooding, the advisory notes.
Rainfall in the last 24 hours has already drenched several parts of the state. Pandoh in Mandi district recorded 140 mm of rain, while Jogindernagar received 70 mm. Shillaro in Shimla and Kataula in Mandi registered 50 mm each, followed by 40 mm in Sujanpur Tira (Hamirpur). Baijnath in Kangra, Rohru and Mandi towns, and Nichar in Kinnaur saw 30 mm each. Banjar in Kullu and Karsog in Mandi recorded 20 mm, while Gohar in Mandi, Narkanda AWS, Rampur Bushahr, Nadaun, Jatton Barrage, and Kalpa all received around 10 mm of rainfall.
With the monsoon gaining pace, the general public has been advised to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel in vulnerable areas, and follow safety instructions issued by district authorities.
