Shimla, Apr 26,
Himachal Pradesh continues to sizzle under an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring across both the hills and foothills. On Friday, Paonta Sahib in Sirmaur district recorded the season’s highest maximum temperature at a scorching 40.0 degrees Celsius, marking a new milestone in this year’s hot and dry spell.
Una followed closely behind at 39.8 degrees Celsius, while several other districts reported temperatures well above seasonal averages. Hamirpur logged 37.8°C, Bilaspur 37.2°C, Kangra 36.2°C, and Mandi 35.2°C, exceeding normal levels by 2 to 4 degrees.
In the state capital Shimla, the mercury climbed to 25.5 degrees Celsius, about 3 degrees above the usual average for this time of year. Towns across the mid and lower hills, including Dharamshala (32.0°C), Solan (33.0°C), and Nahan (34.9°C), also reported unusually high temperatures.
Even traditionally cooler destinations like Manali (24.7°C) and Kalpa (17.8°C) are experiencing warmer-than-usual conditions. However, minimum temperatures have largely stayed within normal ranges, with Keylong remaining the coldest spot at 2.1 degrees Celsius.
According to the Meteorological Centre, Shimla, the weather remained completely dry over the past 24 hours, and no significant fluctuations in minimum or maximum temperatures were recorded.
Relief expected as Western Disturbance approaches
Weather experts predict isolated rain and thunderstorms over the next two days, especially in the mid and higher hills, due to the influence of a western disturbance and cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan and adjoining Pakistan. Although no official weather warnings have been issued, slight relief from the oppressive heat is anticipated towards the weekend.
While parts of upper Himachal Pradesh may witness scattered showers on Saturday and Sunday, the lower and mid-hill districts — including Una, Sirmaur, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, and Kangra — are expected to endure continued hot and dry weather. The maximum temperatures in these regions are likely to remain above normal.
