Shimla, Aug 26,
Political tempers flared in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly on Tuesday after BJP’s Dharamshala MLA Sudhir Sharma vowed to bring back a privilege motion against Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the same day after Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania rejected his earlier notice.
Sharma, whose motion was turned down on procedural grounds, said the issue was serious and not personal. “Speaking untruths and presenting false figures inside the House is not acceptable. This is a matter linked to the state’s unemployed youth. The Chief Minister had announced inside the Assembly that the voluntary grant would be increased to Rs 1 lakh, but it was never received,” he alleged.

He added that the dignity of the Chief Minister’s office must be upheld and warned that if such a situation continues, the very purpose of Assembly sessions and Question Hour comes under question. “Instead of asking questions in the House, it would be better to seek information through RTI,” Sharma remarked.
Responding to the allegations, Chief Minister Sukhu hit back, saying Sharma was “resorting to privilege motions only to remain in the headlines.”
The matter has sharpened the political divide in the ongoing monsoon session, where exchanges between treasury and opposition benches have frequently disrupted proceedings. With Sharma indicating that he will bring the privilege motion again under Assembly rules, the debate is set to intensify further in the days ahead.

Earlier, Speaker Pathania had rejected Sharma’s initial notice on the grounds that the DO letter submitted contained contemptuous allegations but failed to cite any specific Assembly rule. The speaker ruled that such unsubstantiated charges amounted to contempt of the House and could not be entertained.
