Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari assumes additional charge as director of IIAS Shimla

Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Punjab, has been entrusted with the additional charge of Director at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), Shimla by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. Prof. Tiwari assumed this role on Friday, July 26, 2024.
Prof. Tiwari is a distinguished academician with over 41 years of experience. Before his tenure at the Central University of Punjab, which began in August 2020, he served as the Vice-Chancellor of Dr. Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya, Sagar M.P., for five and a half years. Under his leadership, the Central University of Punjab has reached significant milestones in education and research, including earning an NAAC ‘A+’ grade in its second cycle of assessment and ranking consistently among the ‘Top 100 Universities of India’ in the NIRF India Rankings for five consecutive years. Prof. Tiwari has also been pivotal in implementing the NEP-2020 recommendations, emphasizing a multidisciplinary approach and introducing an LOCF-based multidisciplinary curriculum, ABC, and MEE, among other initiatives.
Upon taking on the additional responsibility as Director at IIAS, Prof. Tiwari received congratulations from Prof. ShashiPrabha Kumar, President of the IIAS Society and Chairperson of the Governing Body, as well as from officials and faculty members of the Central University of Punjab. Dr. Vijay Sharma, Registrar of CU Punjab, expressed immense pride, highlighting the honor it brings to the CU Punjab fraternity to have their Vice-Chancellor lead such a prestigious institute known for its quality research in social sciences.
According to the Ministry of Education, Prof. Tiwari will serve as Director In-Charge of IIAS Shimla until a regular director is appointed.
IIAS Shimla, inaugurated by Prof. S. Radhakrishnan on October 20, 1965, is a premier research institute fostering a culture of intellectual inquiry and dialogue. It promotes interdisciplinary studies and contributes significantly to the advancement of knowledge in humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.
The institute, housed in a building also known as ‘Viceregol Lodge’ was originally constructed as a residence for Lord Dufferin, the Viceroy of India from 1884 to 1888, continues to be a landmark of historical and academic significance. The magnificent lawns and historic importance makes it a popular tourist destination.
