Shimla, June 20
For the past few years, the scenic and historic areas of Shimla, particularly the Mall Road and the Ridge, have seen a significant influx of food stalls and street vendors. This move, permitted by the Shimla Municipal Corporation (MC) and the state government, has sparked a wave of protests from local shopkeepers, restaurant owners, and business associations particularily LBBA who argue that these actions compromise the sanctity and hygiene of these cherished landmarks.
Shimla’s Mall Road and Ridge have long been treasured for their vehicle-free zones, a policy dating back to the British era, intended to preserve the pedestrian-friendly nature of these spaces. The recent decisions to allow vendors to set up food stalls and sell various products in these areas have turned them into bustling fairgrounds, detracting from their historical and aesthetic value.
Local businesses, represented by the Lakkar bazaar businessmen association, have voiced strong opposition, asserting that the overcrowding caused by these vendors is not only detrimental to the natural beauty of the sites but also harms their businesses. The influx of street vendors selling food and daily-use items has led to concerns over hygiene and has altered the visitor experience, shifting it away from the serene and picturesque environment that once defined these areas.
In response to these grievances, local shopkeepers and business establishments decided to close down the market until the afternoon in protest. This action underscores the deep frustration within the business community, which feels ignored by higher officials and top bureaucrats who seem to prioritize short-term gains over the long-term preservation of Shimla’s heritage.

The local populace, sympathizing with the business owners, supports this cause, recognizing the importance of maintaining the unique charm and historical significance of the Mall Road and Ridge. As the protests continue, it remains to be seen whether the state government and Shimla MC will heed these concerns and take steps to protect the heritage and unique selling points of these iconic locations.
Shimla MC Commissioner Narender Attri provided a different perspective. He stated that Christ Church Ridge wanted to rent out the church venue and insisted on obtaining permission. The approval was granted on the condition of generating revenue for Shimla MC. He mentioned that the Ridge Church venue is rarely allowed for such exhibitions by the Shimla MC. Attri highlighted a dual authority issue, noting that the Home Secretary also grants permissions for such events. He explained that reciprocal official interests between the two authorities often prevent the Shimla MC from objecting to such permissions.

The local shopkeepers needs to stand strong against the influx of outsiders who are encroaching the Mall Road and the Ridge areas with illegal fruits shops, food stalls and street vendors. Just for money few local shopkeepers renting their shops to the outsiders it’s really dangerous. These outsiders are not friendly with innocent Himachali locals and looting them with different tactics. This must be stopped.
The local traders of shimla also are not good. They I dulge in overpricing and looting of local people.
