
Rain, Thunderstorms bring relief from heatwave in Himachal

Widespread rain and thunderstorms lashed many parts of Himachal Pradesh on Saturday, bringing relief from the heatwave that had affected the state during the past week.
Heavy rain was reported in Shimla and nearby areas during the early morning and afternoon hours. The weather department said the rainy spell has led to a sharp fall in temperatures across the state.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), unsettled weather is likely to continue till June 19. Light to moderate rain is expected at scattered places across the state over the next several days.
The present weather activity is being caused by two cyclonic circulations and an active western disturbance over northwest India.
In Palampur, strong winds uprooted a tree, which fell on a parked vehicle and damaged it. No loss of life was reported.

The highest rainfall during the past 24 hours was recorded at Guler with 66.8 mm, followed by Raipur Maidan 47 mm, Solan 43 mm, Nagrota Surian 42.5 mm, Ghamroor 31.2 mm, Aghar 25.4 mm, Pachhad 25 mm, Dharamshala 23.1 mm, Kangra 19.1 mm, Bharmaur 18.5 mm, Kotkhai 13.4 mm and Mehre Barsar 10 mm.
Thunderstorms and lightning were reported from Shimla, Bhuntar, Kangra, Sundernagar, Jubbarhatti and Murari Devi. Strong winds reaching 68 kmph were recorded at Neri.
The weather department said minimum temperatures at many places remained 2 to 5 degrees Celsius below normal, while maximum temperatures dropped by 4 to 11 degrees Celsius, bringing much-needed relief from the prevailing heatwave conditions.
The IMD has advised people to remain cautious during thunderstorms and gusty winds and avoid taking shelter under trees.
