Recovery from natural disasters: World Bank assures aid for Himachal Pradesh

Amidst the challenges posed by natural disasters, the World Bank has expressed its acknowledgment of the impact of Monsoon rains and has assured its support to aid the recovery process in the hill state of Himachal Pradesh.
In a letter, Auguste Tano Kouame, the Country Director for India, praised the Chief Minister’s exceptional leadership abilities in effectively dealing with the recent natural calamity caused by landslides and flash floods triggered by incessant rains.
A state government spokesperson stated that the World Bank commended the government’s efforts in managing the calamitous events, including the safe return of stranded tourists through timely and responsive measures.
The World Bank has offered comprehensive support to the affected state, including a collaborative assessment with the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) to quantify losses in various sectors such as roads, power, water supply, housing, public buildings, agriculture, horticulture, livestock, and ecological services.
The proposed assessment is intended to play a pivotal role in aiding the recovery process and facilitating reconstruction efforts. Additionally, the World Bank is ready to offer technical assistance in recovery and reconstruction, disaster risk management, infrastructure design, ecosystem services, and livelihood resilience.

In response, the Chief Minister acknowledged the significant hardships the state faced due to the recent devastation and estimated a loss of more than Rs. 8000 crore. The priority of the state government lies in the permanent restoration of critical infrastructure like roads, bridges, power, and water supply.
He expressed gratitude for the vital support from the World Bank during this exceptionally challenging time for the people of Himachal Pradesh. With the assistance of the World Bank, the state aims to embark on a path of recovery and reconstruction to restore normalcy. The Chief Minister emphasized that this generous support would be crucial in achieving these goals.
