Red and Orange weather alerts prompt Two-Day school closure in Shimla district
Shimla, Aug 22
In light of the Red alert in effect until 23rd August 2023, 08:00 am, and an Orange alert for the subsequent two days, 23rd and 24th August, issued by the Indian Meteorological Department, the Deputy Commissioner of Shimla has declared a holiday for all schools in the district on August 23rd and 24th.
In a notification released on Tuesday, the Deputy Commissioner stated, “All government and private educational institutions, universities, colleges, schools, vocational training centers, and anganwadis will remain closed for a period of two days—August 23rd and 24th, 2023. The heads of these institutions must ensure full compliance with this directive, as it is a matter of public safety.”
In another intimation issued by the cluster head of Doordarshan and All India Radio, Shimla, Gurvinder Singh said that due to heavy rains, landslides and soil erosion, the 30 meter high tower of Doordarshan installed in the Awahdevi area on the border of Hamirpur and Mandi districts has been declared unsafe and would be demolished soon.
It is noteworthy that the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert regarding heavy to very heavy rainfall expected across ten districts of Himachal Pradesh over the next 72 hours. An SMS has been dispatched to residents in the state’s districts including Bilaspur, Chamba, Hamirpur, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Sirmaur, and Una, advising caution regarding the anticipated weather conditions. While most areas are likely to experience moderate rainfall, some locales may encounter instances of heavy to very heavy rainfall.
