Senior BJP leader Shanta Kumar questions Amrit Utsav amidst Manipur turmoil”

Former Chief Minister of Himachal and senior BJP leader Shanta Kumar expressed his deep concern over the shameful incidents of rape in Manipur and other parts of the country. Taking a critical stance, Kumar remarked that while the Nation is grappling with these issues, whereas political leaders seem more focused on securing votes. His comments were laced with sarcasm as he wished everyone well.
He criticized the government’s celebration of “Amrit Utsav” and questioned the appropriateness of such festivities in the current scenario. Referring specifically to the violent events in Manipur, including the horrifying incident of women being paraded naked and raped, Shanta Kumar expressed his disbelief at the extent to which India’s democracy has deteriorated. He questioned the appropriateness of celebrating “Amrit Utsav” in the face of such distressing incidents.
The former Chief Minister and Union Minister lamented the disappearance of a significant number of girls and women across the country in recent years. He expressed his disappointment that these distressing incidents are not being adequately addressed within the Parliament of the world’s largest democracy.
Further Kumar urged MPs from all parties in both houses of Parliament to set aside their political differences and engage in a serious, comprehensive discussion on these grave matters. He labeled the recent incidents in Manipur as a stain on the nation’s reputation.
To address the issue of crimes against women, Shanta Kumar proposed the establishment of special fast-track courts with a three-month time frame for resolving cases. He also advocated for the imposition of stringent capital punishment for rape cases across the country.
Shanta Kumar, who retired from active politics, has been an outspoken critic of the BJP government. He has authored a book that highlights his concerns about the party’s departure from its core values and its perceived compromises on issues like corruption.
