Students Federation of India (SFI) State unit on Wednesday strongly opposed a proposed fee hike at Himachal Pradesh University, alleging growing academic corruption and financial mismanagement in the institution.
Addressing the media, SFI State President Anil Thakur said the proposed increase in fees would place an additional burden on students already grappling with rising educational costs. He alleged that the university administration has been misusing financial resources, forcing students to bear the consequences.
Thakur further claimed that around 186 professor posts have been filled without requisite qualifications, creating an unnecessary financial liability on the university.
He described the institution as a “hotbed of corruption,” alleging that irregularities have led to financial instability.
Highlighting infrastructural gaps, he said the university lacks adequate hostel facilities and its own transport system, compelling it to incur recurring expenses on hiring buses from the Himachal Road Transport Corporation. “These funds could have been used to develop permanent assets,” he added.
The SFI also criticised the “Exam Revolution” initiative, alleging that excessive fees are being charged from students for examination processes.
Thakur claimed that invigilators are paid additional remuneration beyond their salaries and accused the administration of failing students deliberately to generate revenue through re-evaluation, with fees reportedly increased by 75 per cent.
SFI State Secretary Sunny Sekta warned that the organisation would launch a statewide if the decisions are not rolled back, holding both the state government and university administration accountable.
