Shimla, Dec 8,
A one-day special road safety awareness drive was held in the tourist hotspot Kufri on Sunday, with the district administration stepping up efforts to manage the rising influx of winter travellers. The campaign was led by Deputy Commissioner Shimla, Anupam Kashyap, along with Senior Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi, and aimed at sensitising visitors on the growing need for responsible road behaviour in the hill district.
Speaking during the initiative, the Deputy Commissioner said that with winter tourism expanding every year, road safety has emerged as a top administrative priority. He urged tourists to adopt basic yet critical precautions—wear seat belts, keep to speed limits, carry all vehicle documents, avoid drunk driving, and refrain from standing or leaning out of sunroofs, particularly on narrow and slippery hill roads.
He assured visitors that the district administration is fully geared to support them in case of any difficulty. Kashyap also appealed to citizens to respond humanely during road mishaps. Instead of recording videos or photos at accident sites, people should assist the injured, he said, calling such intervention “a noble act that strengthens society’s moral fabric.”
SSP Shimla Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi highlighted the deployment of interceptor vehicles equipped with advanced technology as part of the campaign. Procured under the World Bank–funded Himachal Pradesh State Road Transformation Project, these interceptors are fitted with radar, alcove sensors, black-glass detectors, flasher detection systems, GPS, and CCTV cameras. Gandhi said these tools have significantly improved night patrolling, traffic monitoring, and evidence collection, enabling faster police response and greater operational efficiency.
SDM Shimla Rural Manjeet Sharma, District Revenue Officer Sumedh Sharma, and other officials of the district administration also took part in the awareness activities.
The campaign comes at a time when Shimla is witnessing a steady surge in seasonal tourist arrivals. Officials said similar exercises will continue through the winter months to ensure safer travel conditions across the district.
