Shimla eatery blast :HP police enlists NSG for Probe

In response to the tragic explosion that occurred at an eatery in Middle Bazar, Shimla on 18th July 2023, the Himachal Pradesh Police has sought the assistance of the National Security Guards’ (NSG) National Bomb Data Centre (NBDC) to conduct a thorough and expeditious investigation into the incident. This was informed by the police through a media communique.

The explosion, which took place during evening hours, resulted in the death of one person, and approximately 10-12 individuals sustained injuries. The one who lost life was the owner of a local Shimla restaurant Avnish Sud. The ill fated was passing from outside the premises where the blast took place.
The blast caused significant damage to windows and structures in the area, affecting The Mall Road level and reaching up to the top storey of nearby buildings.
In the aftermath of the incident, a case was registered at Police Station, Sadar, Shimla, under sections 336, 337, and 304 A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Notably, to ensure an unbiased and in-depth investigation, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to look into the matter, and the State Forensic Science Laboratory (SFSL) in Shimla also examined the scene.
Considering the sensitivity of the case, the Director General of Police, Himachal Pradesh, approached the Additional Secretary (CTCR) of the Ministry of Home Affairs, New Delhi, requesting the deployment of the NSG’s Post Blast Investigation (PBI) Team. The PBI team, consisting of 14 men and 2 officers from the National Bomb Data Centre, arrived at the spot today, on 23rd July 2023, to gather evidence and conduct a comprehensive investigation, informed a State police spokesperson.
During their visit, the NBDC team inspected the site of the incident, collected crucial evidence, and interacted with the injured persons currently being treated in the hospital. They also held discussions with Dr. Rajesh Kumar of SFSL, who had initially examined the scene on the day of the blast.
The National Bomb Data Centre (NBDC), established in 1988 and operating under the aegis of the NSG, is the premier national agency for Post Blast Investigation (PBI) and maintains records of blast-related incidents across the country.
The HP Police and the NSG’s collaborative efforts aim to unearth the cause of the blast and provide justice to the victims and their families. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as the case progresses.
