Shimla enforces firecracker timings for Diwali

In a bid to protect the environment and public health, the district administration of Shimla has implemented strict regulations on firecracker use during the upcoming Diwali festival.

Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap has issued an order stipulating that firecrackers can only be lit between 8 PM and 10 PM on Diwali. Furthermore, the use of green or eco-friendly firecrackers is mandatory, in accordance with Supreme Court guidelines.

To address concerns about air pollution, the sale and use of green crackers will be restricted to areas with moderate or below air quality index. These eco-friendly alternatives are designed to emit fewer pollutants, reducing the negative impact on the environment.

Similar restrictions will be in place for other festive occasions like Chhath, New Year’s Eve, and Christmas, limiting firecracker use to a two-hour window. The move aligns with the Environment Protection Act, 1986, which empowers authorities to enforce stricter controls on air pollution.

Any violations of the order will be met with legal action under the relevant provisions of the BNS 2023 and other applicable laws. The Shimla Superintendent of Police and all Sub-Divisional Magistrates have been tasked with ensuring strict compliance.

By limiting firecracker use and promoting eco-friendly alternatives, the district administration aims to balance the celebration of tradition with environmental responsibility. This measure is particularly important for protecting vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and children, who are more susceptible to the health effects of air pollution.
