Shimla MC to have 34 wards, New Govt dismisses process of delimitation

Coming out of the legal wrangling and to conduct civic body poll soon, in a big poltical decision, the Congress government yesterday reverted back the former Jairam Thakur Government’s half baked decision to increase the Shimla Municipal Corporation wards from thirty four to forty one. Himachal Pradesh Governor Rajinder Vishavnath Arhlekar promulgated an ordinance on Tuesday setting aside the decision of the previous government.
It is worthwhile to mention that the number of MC ward were increased to 41 by the previous government and after a prolonged delimitation process, it was not able to complete it for almost last one year. The MC Shimla polls were due in June, 2022 but got delayed as the process of delimitation of wards was challenged in the court of law and thus got delayed.
The Shimla MC is working without a elected house for one year and Deputy Commissioner Shimla is designated as the defecto administrator. The current State government decision to revert SMC wards to previous strength would help to end the legal wrangling and impasse forced the state election commission to not hold Election for last one year.
The process of delimitation was challenged by two petitioners in Himachal Pradesh High court as it was stayed by court in five MC wards. Now it was expected that the process may require a month more to finalize the electrol roll afresh in 34 old wards and thereafter the State Election Commission can announce MC polls.
The Shimla MC poll likely to be held in early March after gap of two month.
