Snow blankets higher reaches of Himachal, Lower regions brace for rain or snow as IMD issues red alert
Shimla, Feb 19,
The higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh have been experiencing snowfall since Sunday night, with significant accumulation reported in some areas. According to the Shimla Meteorological Centre, Kukamseri in Lahaul-Spiti district received the highest snowfall of 50 cm, followed by Keylong, the district headquarters, with 15 cm, and Kalpa in Kinnaur with 1.5 cm. Lower regions, however, witnessed partly cloudy skies.
While temperatures remained a few degrees above normal across the state, the minimums ranged from -0.5°C in Kukamseri to 13.8°C in Kangra, the warmest recorded. Manali and Dalhousie recorded minimums of 2.8°C, Shimla 7.2°C (3.8°C above normal), and Dharamshala and Bilaspur 11.2°C.
Meteorological predictions indicate potential rain or snowfall in many parts of the state over the next 24 hours due to the confluence of two western disturbances, a cyclonic circulation, and induced jet winds. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert warning of heavy to very heavy rain or snowfall, along with the possibility of hail.
Additionally, a warning for gusty winds exceeding 40-50 kmph has been issued, with the potential for thunderstorms and lightning in isolated places. Residents are advised to exercise caution and stay updated on weather forecasts.
