Shimla, Dec 24,
Fresh snowfall in Shimla and Lahaul-Spiti has attracted tourists, creating picturesque landscapes, but has also led to roadblocks and disrupted travel. While the snow has enhanced the region’s appeal, it has caused significant challenges for local infrastructure.
In Shimla district, 141 link roads have been closed due to heavy snow, including the Chopal-Deha and Kupvi-Haripur Dhar routes. Slippery conditions in areas like Kumarsain and Kupvi have made driving treacherous. Efforts to clear the roads are underway, but continued snowfall is slowing progress.
The power supply has also been impacted, with 211 distribution transformers out of service. Rohru is facing the most severe outages, with 180 transformers down, leaving residents without power in subzero temperatures. Dodrakwar and Kupvi are also affected, and water supply disruptions have been reported in Jubbal.
In Lahaul-Spiti, the situation is equally challenging. The Superintendent of Police, along with the District Police Quick Reaction Team (QRT), is patrolling areas like Sissu to ensure the safety of tourists. Visitors are being guided to return to safer areas as snowfall persists, while the QRT is assisting with maintaining order and providing aid to those stranded.
The cold wave has intensified difficulties for locals, with temperatures plummeting below freezing, freezing water sources, and disrupting daily activities. Health concerns are rising, particularly among the elderly and children.
Despite these challenges, tourists are flocking to the region to enjoy the snowfall. Authorities have advised people to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.
Local administrations are working hard to restore services and ensure public safety. Snow-clearing operations continue on National Highways and critical routes, while emergency teams are focused on restoring power and assisting those affected.
As snowfall persists, both residents and tourists are urged to exercise caution, stay updated on weather conditions, and cooperate with authorities to ensure their safety.
