Shimla, Jan 10,
The State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has registered a First Information Report (FIR) after allegedly malicious and doctored social media posts surfaced targeting the official calendar of the Congress-led Himachal Pradesh government for the year 2026.
According to officials, the FIR was lodged by the State CID Cyber Crime Cell on January 9, following a complaint from the Printing and Stationery Department, which is responsible for printing the official government calendar.
A department spokesperson said that certain individuals had circulated “fake, baseless and malicious” content on social media platforms, particularly Facebook, by digitally altering the official calendar. The manipulated posts reportedly distorted original dates and presented them in an unrealistic and misleading manner, falsely portraying them as officially printed by the department.
“The calendar circulating on social media has been tampered with and displayed without any authorisation. Such content is being deliberately used to spread misinformation and create confusion among the public,” the spokesperson said, adding that the act was unethical and illegal.
Officials maintained that the forged posts had caused reputational damage to the Printing and Stationery Department and could mislead citizens into questioning the authenticity of official government publications.
Taking serious note of the issue, the Cyber Crime Cell of the State CID has initiated an investigation to trace the origin of the fake posts and identify those responsible for their circulation.
The department has appealed to the public to remain vigilant and not fall prey to misleading content circulating on social media. Citizens have been urged not to post, forward or share such material and to rely only on officially released government information.
Authorities said strict action would be taken against those found involved in creating or disseminating the doctored content, as per provisions of law related to cyber offences and misinformation.
