Shimla, Mar 5
Ruling Congress State Government may file an election petition concerning the February 27 Rajya Sabha election in Himachal Pradesh, alleging rigging. The State government’s counsel said that the Congress government is preparing to file the petition, challenging the fairness of the poll. These six MLAs were allegedly influenced by external agencies deployed unlawfully during the poll.
Notably, Supreme Court Lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi lost the RS poll after a tie, with former Congress Rebel and BJP-nominated candidate Harsh Mahajan declared the winner. Despite having a near two-thirds majority in the state assembly, Congress alleges that six of its MLAs and three Independent members voted for the BJP candidate under external influence. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu stated that this manipulation amounts to a murder of democracy.
The alleged defection of six Congress members, brought in without valid entry passes and escorted by Haryana police and CRPF, led to their disqualification for defying party Whips during the passing of financial bills.
The impact of poll rigging extended beyond the RS election, reducing the Congress government to a minority. Chief Minister emphasized that the government won’t yield to the unlawful demands of a few MLAs, some of whom seek waivers for running illegal stone crushers. The Supreme Court also expressed concerns about the fairness of RS elections following reports of defection in three states.
