Shimla, May 7
Sweltering temperatures gripped Himachal Pradesh as the mercury soared to unusually high levels, with Una registering a scorching 41 degrees Celsius and Neri in Hamirpur reaching a peak of 41.7 degrees Celsius, marking the highest temperatures of the summer season thus far.
The Indian Meteorological Department reported varying amounts of rainfall across the region in the past 24 hours, with Kumarsen in Shimla receiving 15.4 mm, Shillaro 4.6 mm, Theog 2 mm, Bhuntar 1.8 mm, and Kotkhai 1.2 mm.
Maximum temperatures for the day were recorded four to five degrees above normal, with Una experiencing a one-degree increase from the previous day. Neri in Hamirpur consistently recorded the warmest temperatures in the state, surpassing 40 degrees Celsius for the past three days.
Despite the heatwave, the capital town of Shimla saw a slightly milder temperature of 26.6 degrees Celsius, while tourist destinations like Manali and Kufri maintained temperatures around 25 and 20 degrees Celsius, respectively. However, due to the President’s visit to Shimla, tourists seemed to be avoiding the capital to steer clear of potential traffic congestion.
Looking ahead, the IMD issued a forecast of rain or snowfall in isolated places over the next two days, with more precipitation expected after May 9. A yellow alert for thunderstorms and lightning was also issued for the remaining days of the week. This forecast provides a glimmer of relief for residents and tourists alike, offering respite from the oppressive heatwave that has dominated the region.
Despite the fluctuations in weather conditions, heavy footfall of tourists continued to be observed in popular destinations like Manali and Dharmshala, highlighting the enduring appeal of Himachal Pradesh as a favored tourist destination.
