Shimla, May 21,
The Union Government has extended the tenure of Tapan Kumar Deka, IPS (HP:1988), as Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) by one year beyond June 30, 2025, or until further notice. The formal order, issued by Manisha Saxena, Secretary of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, has been circulated to all major constitutional offices and ministries, including the PMO, Cabinet Secretariat, and Ministry of Home Affairs.
The extension has been granted under relaxed provisions of Fundamental Rule 56(d) and Rule 16(1A) of the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958, allowing Deka to serve beyond the standard retirement age.
Deka, a Himachal Pradesh cadre officer known for his deep expertise in counter-terrorism, was appointed as IB Director in June 2022. With this extension, he is set to complete four years in office, marking a rare continuity in India’s intelligence leadership.
This is the second successive extension for Deka, signaling the government’s sustained confidence in his leadership during a time of evolving national and global security challenges. His continued service reflects a strategic approach to maintaining stability at the top of India’s intelligence setup.
He now joins the ranks of a select few intelligence officials who have received similar extensions, including CBI Director Praveen Sood—also from Himachal—highlighting the growing influence of Himachal Pradesh officers in key national security roles.
