Shimla, June 23,
In a major testament to its growing tourism appeal, the Queen of Hills – Shimla – saw an extraordinary influx of over 60,000 tourist vehicles between June 20 and 23, 2025, during the extended weekend rush, informed a official spokesperson of Shimla police. Adding that, notably, this figure does not include local traffic, which continued to operate alongside the massive tourist flow.

The Himachal Pradesh Police, District Shimla, rose to the occasion with a comprehensive traffic management plan that ensured smooth vehicular movement throughout the city. A total of 189 dedicated traffic police personnel, supported by 85 additional police officials, were deployed round-the-clock at key intersections and congestion-prone areas, they informed.
Despite the massive tourist volume, Shimla Police effectively managed the situation with minimum disruption. The police spokesperson informed that eleven incidents involving vehicle breakdowns and minor accidents were swiftly attended to by 25 Traffic Motorcycle Riders, with the assistance of strategically stationed tow-away cranes. Prompt responses helped in maintaining uninterrupted traffic flow.
Simultaneously, the city also hosted the JOA (IT) Examination across 13 centres, with 4,305 candidates appearing, they added. To ensure safety and security during the examination, an additional 140 police personnel were deployed to maintain law and order, implement security protocols, and ensure surveillance at the venues.
The police personal further stated that thanks to coordinated efforts, the majority of candidates were able to reach their examination centres on time. However, approximately 30 candidates reported late and were denied entry after the 10:30 AM cut-off, in accordance with standard examination protocols, they added.
Responding to some media reports that portrayed a chaotic traffic situation, Shimla Police clarified that the on-ground reality was efficiently managed and urged media outlets to verify facts before reporting.
“The coordinated efforts of our personnel ensured smooth traffic movement and timely access for examinees, even during this peak tourist rush,” said a senior police official.
Shimla Police further appealed to all visitors and media persons to support ongoing traffic efforts by cooperating with directions and verifying facts from official sources.
The city’s ability to handle such a heavy tourist inflow without major disruption highlights both its enduring popularity and the preparedness of local administration during peak travel periods.
