Mandi, Apr 25,
In a heart-wrenching incident, five people—including an 8-month-old baby—lost their lives in a tragic car accident near Pandoh Dam in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district on Friday. The victims were returning home from a wedding procession when their car plunged into a deep gorge along Bakhli Road.
According to police sources, the vehicle veered off the road near Pandoh and fell into a ditch, killing all five occupants on the spot. The deceased have been identified as Dunichand (35), his wife Kanta Devi (30), and their infant daughter Kajal (8 months), all residents of Taraur Chachiyot village. Also among the victims were Dahlu Ram, son of Thalia Ram from Naun Chachiyot, and Meena Kumari from Lahaul.
The family had attended the wedding of Dunichand’s younger brother, and were on their way back when the accident occurred. What began as a joyful occasion ended in devastating tragedy, leaving the entire community in mourning.
Local residents, who were quick to report the accident, alerted the authorities. A rescue team comprising personnel from the Pandoh police post, SDRF, and local volunteers responded promptly and recovered the bodies from the gorge.
SHO Sadar Deshraj confirmed that the police post at Pandoh received the alert, following which swift action was taken to conduct the rescue operation. The bodies have been sent for postmortem, and a case has been registered to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
Preliminary reports suggest the vehicle may have lost control on the hilly terrain, but further investigation is underway.
The tragic accident has cast a pall of gloom over the region, where the festive mood of a wedding has now been replaced by sorrow and shock. Authorities have urged drivers to exercise extreme caution while traveling on mountain roads, particularly during late hours and in areas with poor visibility.
