The Tricity Tempo Traveller Union (TTTU) is fuming over what they perceive as an unfair advantage enjoyed by Himachal Pradesh taxi operators. The union alleges that Himachal cabs are operating illegally in Chandigarh and surrounding areas, offering lower fares due to a disparity in road tax charges between the two regions.
The TTTU claims their cabs, particularly tempo travellers, are being heavily taxed by Himachal Pradesh, while Himachal cabs face no such charges in Chandigarh. This situation creates an uneven playing field, especially during the peak tourist season when demand for taxis surges due to scorching summer heat in the plains driving tourists towards the cooler climes of Himachal.
The union has threatened legal action against Himachal cabs and is considering restrictions on their entry into the Tricity area. They argue that the hefty road taxes imposed by Himachal Pradesh stifle their business and threaten their livelihood.
With tourist influx expected to rise in the coming months, the TTTU’s stance could lead to friction between taxi operators from both regions. It remains to be seen if the union’s legal action materializes and what steps, if any, will be taken to address the concerns regarding the differing tax structures.
