Shimla, Aug 13,
An under-construction tunnel in Shimla collapsed on Tuesday morning. The incident occurred at the four lane Tunnel, which was being built on the Kalka-Shimla highway near Chalaunthi near Sanjauli of Shimla.
On Monday evening, workers noticed that some stones and soil had begun to fall inside the tunnel. As a precaution, all the workers and machinery were evacuated before the collapse.
NHAI Project Manager Achal Jindal reported that debris had accumulated where the tunnel’s portal was being constructed. The process of reinforcing the portal was underway when a landslide triggered by heavy rains caused the collapse.
It is worth noting that several tunnels are currently under construction in Shimla, including the tunnels from Malyana to Chalaunthi. The collapse of the tunnel near the helipad due to the ongoing monsoon rains has caused fear among the local residents.
