Shimla, April 28
The ongoing spell of intense heat across North Western Himalayan states including Himachal Pradesh is expected to change with stormy weather in the end of month.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for hailstorms and rainfall across several districts from April 28 to May 3.
According to the IMD, five to ten districts are likely to witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, hail, and gusty winds during this period. Wind speeds of 40–50 kmph are expected at isolated places, particularly in districts such as Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti on April 28 and 29, and 30–40 kmph on April 30 and May 3.
Una recorded a maximum temperature of around 42–43°C on Monday, matching or nearing its previous April record set on April 30, 2022. The prevailing heatwave conditions are expected to ease as a western disturbance becomes active over the region, bringing relief for the next two to three days.
Higher reaches, including Rohtang and Shinkula, have already started receiving light snowfall, and the fresh weather system may push temperatures down further, potentially reviving cold conditions in these areas. In the mid-hill regions, weather is expected to remain largely pleasant, with slightly warm conditions during the day.
The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain or snowfall at isolated places on April 28, 29, 30 and May 3. Minimum temperatures are not expected to see significant changes over the next 24 hours, but may fall by 2–4°C over the subsequent three to four days. Similarly, maximum temperatures are likely to decline by 2–5°C across many parts of the state during the same period.
Weathermen also highlighted that sudden heatwave conditions may give little respite for time being but it would persist at isolated locations in the long term.
