1986 Asian Games Bronze medal winner in racing, Suman Rawat Mehta, plunged into the game of politics after joining the Congress party here today.
Rawat’s father-in-law is a BJP worker, but she decided to take a different political ideology.
She retired from the post of Director of HP Youth Services and Sports Department, expressed her faith in the leadership of Himachal Pradesh Congress President MP Pratibha Singh and joined the Congress party today.
State Congress chief inducted her into the fold of the party and said Suman Rawat is a well-known 3000-m racing champion not only of Himachal Pradesh but of the country who has won laurels in many national and international competitions.
Rawat joining the party will further strengthen the Congress party in the state ahead of assembly elections, she added.
After joining the Congress party, Suman Rawat Mehta said the party had made an important contribution in laying the foundation of modern India. Today women are excelling in various fields due to the policies of the Congress party and strong and visionary thinking, she added.
Describing the late Virbhadra Singh, who remained Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh six times as a true statesman, Rawat said it was due to his inspiration that she was able to make a different identity in the sports world.
“Acknowledging Congress party maintaining the unity and integrity of the country, influenced by the ideology of the Congress party, I have joined the party and will work for strengthening it under the leadership of Pratibha Singh in future,” she further stated.
It is worth mentioning here that Arjuna Awardee Suman Rawat won a bronze medal in the Asian Games in the 3,000 meters race in the year 1986 and gold medals in SAIF Games in 1,500 and 3,000 mt races. She was also the undefeated National champion continuously from 1980 to 1994.
