HP Cong to mobilise 1,100 leaders for Delhi protest, Sukhu to lead march towards Supreme Court
Shimla, Oct 10,
Himachal Pradesh Congress has decided to mobilise at least 1,100 leaders and workers for the national protest in New Delhi on October 12 against alleged electoral irregularities and concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Cabinet ministers, Congress MLAs and organisational functionaries are expected to join the proposed march towards the Supreme Court. According to the party’s state spokesperson, the delegation will leave for Delhi on Sunday evening and reach Himachal Bhawan on Monday morning.
The mobilisation comes amid the Congress-led INDIA bloc’s campaign seeking electoral transparency and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Addressing the media in Shimla on Saturday, Sukhu accused the Centre of attempting to suppress democratic dissent by allegedly restricting peaceful protests in Delhi. He said the right to protest and question the electoral process was fundamental to democracy.
Defending Rahul Gandhi and the opposition’s allegations of “vote chori”, Sukhu maintained that raising questions about electoral practices could not be equated with creating anarchy.
“If the Central government believes that it can silence democratic voices by preventing peaceful protests, it is mistaken,” he said, emphasising that voters must be free to exercise their franchise without fear or pressure.
Congress leader Akshay Singh Nainta said public confidence in the electoral process must take precedence over partisan considerations. He called for transparent, fact-based responses to concerns over voter lists and the SIR exercise.
“Nothing is more important than the people’s right to vote; every question raised about the electoral process requires a transparent answer,” Nainta said.
The October 12 mobilisation is expected to bring together state-level leaders and grassroots workers as the Congress intensifies its campaign on electoral transparency and accountability. The precise legal course intended through the proposed march towards the Supreme Court was not specified in the statements available.
