Shimla, June 10,
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has declared byelections for 13 assembly seats across the country, necessitated by the election of certain legislators to the Lok Sabha and subsequent resignations. The Chief Electoral Officer, Manish Garg, highlighted that the seats include three in Himachal Pradesh, four in West Bengal, two in Uttarakhand, and one each in Bihar, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, and Madhya Pradesh.
In Himachal Pradesh, byelections will take place for the Dehra assembly in Kangra, Hamirpur, and Nalagarh in Solan district.
The notification for these bypolls will be issued on June 14, 2024 (Friday). The schedule is as follows: the last date for filing nominations is June 21, 2024 (Friday), scrutiny of nominations will occur on June 24, 2024 (Monday), and the final date for withdrawal of candidatures is June 26, 2024 (Wednesday). Polling is set for July 10, 2024 (Wednesday), with counting to be conducted on July 13, 2024 (Saturday), and the entire election process to be concluded by July 15, 2024 (Monday).
The vacancies in Himachal Pradesh arose on June 2 when Speaker Kuldeep Pathania accepted the resignations of three Independent MLAs: Hoshiyar Singh from Dehra, Ashish Sharma from Hamirpur, and K.L. Thakur from Nalagarh. These members resigned on March 22 and joined the opposition BJP the following day. The BJP has announced their candidacies for the upcoming bypolls.
In the current 68-member Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, the Congress holds 38 seats, the BJP has 27 seats, and three seats are vacant.
These byelections are critical for both major parties as they seek to solidify their positions in the respective states. The upcoming bypolls are expected to be a significant political event, reflecting broader national trends and local dynamics.
