Shimla, July 6
Shimla is grappling with an inconsistent water supply, fluctuating between 38 and 45 million liters per day (MLD), attributed to increased turbidity from monsoon rains, according to Shimla Jal Prabhandhan Nigam Limited (SJPNL).
After severe summer shortages saw supply plummet to 28 MLD, recent improvements have stabilized the supply around 44 to 45 MLD. However, the past four days have shown significant daily fluctuations:
– 06-07-2024: 44.73 MLD
– 05-07-2024: 39.37 MLD
– 04-07-2024: 43.04 MLD
– 03-07-2024: 44.99 MLD
Breaking down the supply from individual schemes reveals the following:
– Gumma: 22.44 MLD, 21.15 MLD, 21.25 MLD, 22.01 MLD
– Giri: 13.69 MLD, 11.32 MLD, 14.17 MLD, 15.51 MLD
– Churot: 3.09 MLD, 2.51 MLD, 2.44 MLD, 2.40 MLD
– Seog: 0.19 MLD, 0.37 MLD, 0.11 MLD, 0.00 MLD
– Chairh: 1.21 MLD, 1.03 MLD, 0.90 MLD, 0.85 MLD
– Koti Brandi: 4.11 MLD, 2.89 MLD, 4.17 MLD, 4.18 MLD
With the risk of water contamination from increased silt levels and flash floods, SJPNL advise residents to boil water for ten minutes before consumption. Despite ongoing treatment efforts, the risk of contamination remains.
Also the officials are hopeful that soon the erratic water supply should stablise.
