The State Vigilance & Anti-Corruption Bureau (SVACB) of Himachal Pradesh has arrested two Punjab-based university professors on charges of bribery. The arrest was made following a tip-off and a subsequent raid conducted by the Vigilance Bureau team on August 11, 2024.
The suspects, identified as resident of Faridkot, and Barnala, were found in possession of Rs 3.5 lakh. The cash was seized from their vehicle, a Punjab-registered Creta, within the jurisdiction of Police Station Rakkar in District Kangra. The professors, who were in the area to conduct an inspection at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research in Palampur, failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the money.
According to the spokesperson of the anti-graft unit of HP police, “The detained individuals were deputed by the Pharmacy Council of India for the inspection of the educational institute. However, there are strong suspicions that they may have received illegal payments to favor the institute. Consequently, a case under Section 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) has been registered against them.”
The arrested professors are currently in custody, and a thorough investigation is underway to determine the full extent of their involvement and any potential corruption within the institution they were inspecting. The Vigilance Bureau remains committed to rooting out corruption and ensuring transparency in public institutions.
