Former MLA and senior Congress leader Dr. Babu Ram Gautam passed away at his residence in Bilaspur on last night after a prolonged illness. He was under treatment at AIIMS Bilaspur for some time.
Dr. Gautam, remembered for his remarkable contributions in politics, administration, and social service, breathed his last surrounded by family members. He was serving as the State President of the Former Legislative Council and had remained actively involved in various social initiatives throughout his life.
A respected figure in Bilaspur’s political landscape, Dr. Gautam had contested the 1985 Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections on a Congress ticket and defeated BJP’s Sada Ram. In 1990, he was denied a ticket when the Congress fielded Major Shiv Ram.
Later, during the 1993 elections, he again represented the Congress but lost to BJP candidate J.P. Nadda by a narrow margin of just 22 votes. He contested once more in 1998 but was again defeated by Nadda. Prior to that, he had also served as Vice President of the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC).
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed deep grief over the demise of Dr. Gautam. In his condolence message posted on social media, Sukhu said, “The news of the demise of former MLA of Bilaspur Sadar, Shri Baburam Gautam ji is very sad.
His contribution in the field of public service will always be remembered. May God grant eternal peace to the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family in this hour of grief.”
Leaders cutting across party lines and residents of Bilaspur have mourned his passing, remembering him as a committed public servant and a man of integrity who worked tirelessly for the welfare of the people.
