The Himachal Pradesh Health Department on Sunday rejected Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur’s claim of a large-scale tuberculosis (TB) outbreak at the MGMSC Nursing Hostel in Khaneri, Rampur, stating that only two students have tested positive and are currently under treatment.
In an official clarification, the department termed reports of 19 students suffering from TB as “misleading,” asserting that both identified cases were detected last year and promptly treated as per protocol.
According to the department, the first case was reported on July 9, 2025, and the second on December 9, 2025, with treatment initiated immediately in both instances.

Health officials said that 16 students identified as close contacts were placed on TB preventive therapy in line with Government of India guidelines, emphasising that these individuals are not TB patients. The department also categorically denied any cases of MDR-TB at the institute.
Officials maintained that all standard procedures under the National TB Elimination Programme were strictly followed, including screening of contacts and preventive intervention to curb transmission. Both affected students have also been provided financial and nutritional support under the Nikshay Poshan Yojana.
The clarification comes amid an ongoing political controversy, with the opposition alleging negligence in handling health services.
The government, however, has urged restraint and responsible reporting, cautioning against the spread of unverified information that could create unnecessary panic.
“Misleading information is being circulated regarding TB cases at MGMSC Khaneri, Rampur (Nursing Hostel). Media platforms are requested to share only verified facts to avoid panic and ensure accurate public awareness. Responsible reporting is appreciated,” the spokesperson said.
