New Delhi, Sept 9
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has revised the LPG refill booking norms, reducing the inter-refill booking gap for domestic consumers in rural areas from 45 days to 25 days. The new norm will apply uniformly to consumers in both urban and rural areas with immediate effect.
In a communication dated September 7, 2026, addressed to the Chairman and Managing Directors of Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), the Ministry said the decision had been taken in view of the improved LPG supply position in the country.
The Ministry had earlier introduced differentiated booking intervals as a temporary demand-management measure following the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East in February 2026. Through a PIB press release dated March 12, the government had prescribed a 25-day booking interval for urban consumers and 45 days for those in rural areas.
According to the latest communication, the LPG supply situation has now improved considerably and refill backlogs have come down substantially compared with the situation prevailing when the restrictions were introduced.
“Now, in view of the present LPG supply position and the considerable reduction in refill backlogs,” the Ministry has decided to revise the existing refill booking interval, the communication stated.
Under the revised arrangement, all domestic LPG consumers, including those residing in rural areas, will be eligible to book a fresh refill after a gap of 25 days.
The three public sector oil marketing companies have been advised to take necessary action to implement the revised inter-refill booking interval uniformly across urban and rural areas.
The order has been issued with the approval of the competent authority and would come into force with immediate effect.
The move is expected to provide greater flexibility to rural households, which were earlier required to wait an additional 20 days compared with urban LPG consumers before booking their next refill.
