Shimla, May 16,
A delegation of apple growers, representing the Himalayan Apple Growers Society (HAGS), met Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal in New Delhi today, demanding an immediate ban on apple imports from Turkey. The delegation voiced serious concern over the rapidly growing influx of cheap, subsidized Turkish apples, which they say is causing significant losses to domestic producers. According to the growers, the situation has deteriorated to a point where local farmers are unable to even recover their basic production costs.
In a memorandum submitted to the Minister, the delegation argued that importing apples from Turkey is not only economically damaging but also poses a threat to national security. They highlighted Turkey’s strategic military cooperation with Pakistan, a nation known for supporting terrorism in India. Continuing trade with such a country, they asserted, compromises both economic stability and national interest.

The delegation emphasized that apples are more than just a crop—they are the backbone of the hill states’ rural economies and the primary source of livelihood for millions. They urged the government to act swiftly, stressing that this issue is directly tied to the dignity of Indian farmers, the economic resilience of mountainous regions, and the broader vision of a self-reliant India.
Minister Goyal assured the delegation that their concerns were being taken seriously and promised appropriate action. The meeting concluded with a renewed call for policy measures to protect the interests of Indian apple growers and to safeguard national priorities.
The delegation was led by Rajesh Dhanta, General Secretary and Media Head of HAGS.
