Shimla, Sept 13,
The mercury plummeted across Himachal Pradesh following a light snowfall in the higher reaches and persistent rain in most areas. Shimla’s temperature dropped by three degrees to 12.8°C, while Kalpa saw a low of 10°C. Tabo, a Buddhist monk spot, experienced a significant temperature drop of 2.4°C, settling at 8°C. Popular tourist destinations also witnessed cooler weather, with Dalhousie recording 14.9°C and Kasauli at 15.7°C.
Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti remained the coldest place, with temperatures dipping to 8.8°C. Other locations also experienced cooler weather, including Manali at 16°C, Dharamshala and Solan at 18°C each, Una and Nahan at 22°C, and Kangra, Mandi, and Chamba at 20°C each. Bhuntar Airport in Kullu district recorded a temperature of 22°C, while Bilaspur registered 21.7°C.
In terms of rainfall, Guler in Kangra district recorded the highest at 64 mm, followed by Palampur with 46 mm, Dharamshala with 41 mm, and Slapper in Mandi district with 27 mm. Chopal in Shimla district received 21.4 mm of rain, Sangla in Kinnaur had 20.8 mm, Kalpa recorded 20.3 mm, and Naina Devi in Bilaspur received 18.4 mm.
The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning in isolated areas of the state. Additionally, the IMD’s HydroMet Division has warned of moderate to high flash flood risks in watersheds and neighborhoods of Kullu, Shimla, Kinnaur, and Sirmaur districts over the next 24 hours. With heavy rain expected to continue, there is a possibility of surface runoff and inundation in low-lying areas and fully saturated soils in these regions.
