Shimla, March 18
The ruling Bhartiya Janta Party has decided to field Dr Sikander Kumar as their candidate for the Rajya Sabha from Himachal Pradesh. A party spokesperson disclosed the same here today.
The Rajya Sabha polls for the 13 seats in six states which are falling vacant between April 2 to April 9 has been scheduled on March 31. Among these is the one seat in Himachal Pradesh which will fall vacant after retirement of current RS MP Anand Sharma on April 2 this year.
The poll scheduled are Assam 2 seats, Himachal Pradesh 1 seat, Kerala 3 seats, Nagaland 1 seat, Tripura 1 seat and Punjab 5 seats. The last date for nomination will be March 21, wherein scrutiny of nomination shall be done on March 22 and last date for withdrawal of candidatures shall be allowed till March 24.
Dr Sikander is currently the Vice Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh University. Prior to it he was also President of BJP Scheduled caste Morcha.
He hails from Hamirpur district of the state and has been engaged in the Teaching, Research and Extension for about three decades and has published 3 books – Statistical Methods, Micro Economics and Himalayan Economics. He has published one Journal besides 31 Research Papers published in the Journals.
