Shimla, July 23
The state of Himachal Pradesh is currently experiencing unpredictable monsoon rains, resulting in a challenging weather scenario.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and yellow warnings for flash floods, particularly affecting the districts of Kangra, Sirmaur, and Shimla.
According to the IMD’s Hydromet Division in New Delhi, these areas face a low to moderate risk of flash floods over the next 24 hours.
Over the past 24 hours, light to moderate rainfall has been recorded in many regions, with isolated places experiencing heavy to very heavy rainfall. Kangra received the highest rainfall at 150 mm, followed by Dharamshala with 140 mm. This heavy rainfall is expected to cause surface runoff and inundation in areas with fully saturated soils and low-lying regions, potentially leading to significant disruptions.
In the last two days, landslides have been reported in Shimla and Kinnaur districts, compounding the issues caused by the heavy rains.
Meanwhile, some areas like Solan and Una are experiencing a near absence of monsoon showers, resulting in sweltering heatwaves and humid conditions.
The erratic behavior of the southwest monsoon has created a dual threat of flooding and drought-like conditions, emphasizing the need for vigilant monitoring and preparedness across the state. Residents in the affected areas are advised to remain alert and follow local advisories to ensure their safety during this unpredictable monsoon season.
