Shimla, July 18
Himachal Pradesh Kissan Sabha (HKS) submitted a memorandum on Wednesday to newly elected Members of Parliament and Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut, urging the implementation of promises made after the prolonged protest at the Delhi border. The farmers’ demands remain unmet, leaving the agricultural community in distress.
An HKS delegation approached the offices of the newly elected MPs and Kangana Ranaut. In her absence, the memorandum, highlighting the farmers’ deep-seated grievances, was handed to her aide.
The memorandum reminded the Modi government of the unkept promises made following the significant farmer protest, which ended on December 9, 2022.
The protest at the Delhi border lasted over a year, with farmers enduring harsh conditions to voice their demands. Central to these demands were the repeal of the controversial farm laws, guaranteed minimum support prices (MSP) for crops, and comprehensive measures to ensure economic stability for farmers.
Although the government initially agreed to these terms, the promised MSP reforms have yet to materialize. Many farmers continue to struggle with fluctuating market prices and rising debts.
Farmers feel a strong sense of betrayal, believing their trust was exploited for political gain and then discarded once the protests subsided. The memorandum submitted to the MPs and Kangana Ranaut’s office underscores the urgency of their situation and calls for immediate action to address their grievances.
Led by Khushal Bhardwaj, the delegation expressed their frustration and disappointment over the unkept promises. “We trusted the government to stand by its word, but we have been let down time and again,” said Bhardwaj. “Our livelihoods are at stake, and we need the promised reforms to survive,” he added.
Ranaut’s office assured the delegation that the memorandum would be reviewed and the issues raised would be addressed with the concerned authorities.
