Shimla/Kullu, June 25,
The first major spell of monsoon rains has begun causing widespread damage in Himachal Pradesh, with a cloudburst reported in the upper reaches of the Sainj valley in Kullu district. The incident triggered a flash flood in the ‘Jeeva rivulet’, carrying heavy debris downstream.
Videos circulating on social media suggest that the cloudburst occurred high in the valley, unleashing large volumes of water and debris. According to initial reports, a Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd. (HPPCL) power project in the area was temporarily shut down as a precautionary measure. So far, no casualties have been reported, but an official confirmation from the district administration is still awaited.
The rivulet joins Parbati river, downstream.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Flash Flood Guidance Bulletin, warning of low to moderate flash flood risk in parts of Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, and Sirmaur districts over the next 24 hours.
The IMD’s Hydromet Division stated that the warning will remain in effect until 11:30 AM on June 26, citing the likelihood of intense rainfall in vulnerable watersheds and low-lying areas. Surface runoff and inundation in fully saturated zones have been forecast, urging residents and local authorities to remain on alert and monitor real-time updates.
Heavy rainfall has already been recorded in several parts of the state, with Palampur receiving 145.4 mm, Jogindernagar 113.0 mm, and Nahan 94.0 mm in the past 24 hours. These figures indicate very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, contributing to elevated flash flood risks.
The weather office also reported gusty winds reaching 56 kmph in Tabo, along with thunderstorm activity in Sundernagar and parts of Kangra. Despite the rain, temperatures remained above normal, with Bhuntar recording the highest maximum at 35.4°C and Kukumseri the lowest minimum at 13.1°C.
The southwest monsoon has now fully advanced into Himachal Pradesh, increasing the threat of extreme weather events. The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places over the next five days, along with continued thunderstorm activity across various districts.
Residents are advised to stay vigilant, avoid traveling to vulnerable zones, and follow advisories issued by the local administration and weather authorities.
