Former SJVNL CMD and HERC Chairman Nand Lal Sharma passes away at 60
Chandigarh, July 23
Former Chairman and Managing Director of SJVN Limited and serving Chairman of the Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission (HERC), Nand Lal Sharma, passed away in the early hours of Thursday after suffering a brain haemorrhage. He was 60.
Sharma breathed his last at around 1:45 a.m. at Paras Hospital, Panchkula, where he had been undergoing treatment since Saturday. He was admitted after suffering a brain haemorrhage and remained on ventilator support for several days. Despite intensive medical care, he could not recover.
A respected administrator and power sector professional, Sharma devoted decades of his career to strengthening India’s energy infrastructure. His tenure as Chairman and Managing Director of SJVN is widely regarded as a transformative phase in the company’s history. Under his leadership, SJVN expanded from being primarily a hydropower company into a diversified energy enterprise with interests in thermal, solar, wind and transmission projects.

The company also broadened its presence across several Indian states and overseas, reflecting his vision for sustainable and balanced growth.
Known for his administrative ability, professional integrity and calm leadership, Sharma earned the respect of colleagues, policymakers and industry leaders alike.
He was recognised for promoting clean energy initiatives and steering the public sector undertaking towards greater operational efficiency and expansion.
After completing his tenure at SJVN, Sharma was appointed Chairman of the Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission, where he continued to contribute to the power sector through regulatory reforms and policy guidance.
His passing has been widely mourned by the power industry, government officials and former associates, who remembered him as a visionary leader and a humble individual committed to public service.
Sharma is survived by his wife, Lalita Sharma, son Abhinav Sharma and daughter Aditi Sharma. His last rites will be performed at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Manimajra Cremation Ground in Chandigarh.
