Fresh snowfall in Kinnaur’s high-altitude areas, Rain in lower hills intensifies cold wave

Shimla, Sept 13

Several high-altitude regions of Kinnaur district experienced light snowfall on Thursday morning, bringing a cold wave to the area.

Snowfall was reported in Kalpa, Nichar, and Pooh blocks, blanketing peaks such as Nakdam, Nithal, Thach, Ranikanda, and Kinnaur Kailash in a layer of fresh snow. Sangla Kanda, Shoshala Peak, and Sigan Hills in Batseri received up to seven centimeters of snow.

Lower-lying areas of Kinnaur experienced consistent rainfall, further contributing to the cold spell across the district. The sudden change in weather has caused a significant drop in temperature throughout the region.

Despite the challenging conditions, Nagendra Chandla, Acting Regional Manager of Transport Corporation in Reckong Peo, assured that vehicular traffic between Reckong Peo, Shimla, and Pooh was still operational.

The harsh weather conditions across Himachal Pradesh impacted daily life, with 34 roads blocked and 24 electricity transformers out of service by Thursday evening.

Meanwhile, upper Shimla saw continuous rain throughout the day. The Meteorological Center in Shimla had issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall across several districts, including Shimla, Kinnaur, and Sirmaur, for September 13, warning of possible floods in these areas. Rainfall is expected to continue through September 18, raising concerns over potential further disruptions..
