Shimla, May 12,
Amid tensions between India and Pakistan, apple growers in Himachal Pradesh have demanded a complete ban on apple imports from Turkey, accusing the country of siding with Pakistan during the recent border flare-up. The call has quickly gained political and public support, with leaders framing it as both an economic and patriotic concern.

Harish Chauhan, President of the Himachal Pradesh Fruit, Flower, and Vegetable Producers Association, criticized Turkey’s increasing apple exports to India, claiming it has disrupted the domestic market. “Turkey has betrayed India by openly supporting Pakistan. In such a situation, trade agreements with it should be reviewed immediately, and imports of apples and other goods should be banned,” Chauhan said.
Congress national spokesperson and Theog MLA, Kuldeep Singh Rathore, echoed the demand, reminding the public of India’s goodwill gesture during Turkey’s recent earthquake. “India launched ‘Operation Dost’ and sent NDRF teams, drones, and essential supplies. But instead of gratitude, Turkey has extended military support to Pakistan. This is a betrayal,” Rathore stated, urging citizens to boycott Turkish products and tourism.
The call for a trade embargo reflects rising economic nationalism, especially among Himachal’s farming community, which has faced challenges from cheaper imported apples affecting local prices.
In a parallel development supporting domestic agriculture, the Himachal Pradesh government has declared Pangi in Chamba district as the state’s first natural farming sub-division. A dedicated Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) will be established, backed by a revival fund of Rs 5 crore. The government has also announced procurement of naturally grown barley from the region at a minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 60 per kg.
These twin developments — the demand to halt Turkish imports and the promotion of sustainable agriculture — underline Himachal’s growing shift toward self-reliance and environmentally conscious farming, rooted in both economic and national interest.
