The elderly patient had reached the medical college for treatment when her rapid antigen test returned positive for COVID-19. Despite the doctors’ advice to get admitted for observation, the woman reportedly declined hospitalization. She was subsequently discharged with medication and home isolation instructions.
Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Sirmaur, Dr. Amitabh Jain, confirmed the case and stated that the patient’s sample will be sent to Nerchowk Medical College in Mandi for genome sequencing. “The genome sequencing will help identify the exact variant of the virus,” he informed.
In response to the case, the Block Medical Officer (BMO) has been directed to conduct contact tracing and test all individuals who may have come into contact with the woman. Dr. Jain assured that the oxygen plant at the Nahan Medical College is fully operational, and ICU beds have been kept ready as a precaution. “We’ve also requested for fresh stock of RT-PCR kits to scale up testing,” he added.
Precautionary measures stepped up
This development follows a recent advisory issued by the Himachal Pradesh government to all medical institutions in the state, directing them to reactivate COVID-19 preparedness protocols. Hospitals have been asked to ensure the availability of oxygen supply, ICU support, and diagnostic laboratories. Moreover, genome sequencing of any positive samples is to be undertaken at Nerchowk to monitor circulating variants.
The state government’s advisory came amid rising COVID-19 numbers nationwide. On the same day, the country reported over 4,000 new cases, raising concerns about a potential fresh wave of infections. Himachal Pradesh’s case is the first in this current spike, prompting health authorities to remain on alert.
With elderly citizens being particularly vulnerable, health officials have urged people to follow precautionary measures and not ignore symptoms such as fever, fatigue, or respiratory discomfort.
The district administration has reiterated its commitment to ensuring safety through surveillance, preparedness, and timely response. Citizens are advised to cooperate with health teams and avoid panic as the situation remains under control for now.
