Shimla, June 10,
Himachal Pradesh reeled under a severe heatwave on Monday, with Una recording a blistering 42.4°C, marking not only the highest temperature of the season but also the second-highest June temperature ever recorded in the state’s meteorological history.
Trailing close were Neri, Paonta Sahib, and Dhaulakuan, each recording a sweltering 42.0°C, underscoring an alarming heat trend in the plains and lower hills of the state.

According to the Meteorological Centre, Shimla, daytime temperatures across Himachal remained well above seasonal norms, with Bilaspur touching 40.1°C, Mandi at 39.4°C, and Berthin at 38.7°C. The state capital Shimla also registered its hottest day of the year at 29°C, edging past its May high of 28.6°C.
The unusual spike in temperatures is being attributed to the continued absence of pre-monsoon showers, with the weather department forecasting dry conditions to persist across most regions of the state for at least the next 72 hours.
Adding to the discomfort, air quality dipped to moderate levels in several lower hill districts, with light haze and high humidity levels reported, raising health concerns—especially for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.
Rising risk of forest fires and water stress
The persistent dry spell, coupled with scorching heat, has heightened the risk of forest fires, particularly in the pine-rich belts of lower and middle Himachal. Simultaneously, increasing water scarcity is being flagged by local panchayats and urban bodies as streams and local water sources begin to dry up.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has urged residents to take preventive measures to avoid heat-related illnesses, including staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, and keeping living spaces ventilated.
What lies ahead
With no significant rainfall in sight and no major relief expected from the high temperatures, June 2025 could go down as one of the hottest starts to summer in recent memory for Himachal.
