Shimla, Jan 20,
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather advisory predicting moderate to heavy snowfall across Himachal Pradesh from January 22 to January 23, 2025. Popular tourist destinations like Shimla, Manali, Mashobra, and Narkanda are likely to transform into winter hotspots as snow blankets the region.
The forecast attributes the snowfall to multiple weather systems, including a western disturbance over North Pakistan and neighboring areas, and a subtropical westerly jet stream with winds reaching up to 140 knots over Northwest India. While higher-altitude areas may experience isolated precipitation until January 21, widespread snowfall is expected from late January 22 into the night of January 23.
Mid and high-altitude regions, including Naldehra, Kufri, Solang Valley, and Sissu, are set to receive light to moderate snowfall. Shimla, Manali, Mashobra, and Narkanda are expected to see heavier spells, making them appealing destinations for tourists. Meanwhile, some lower hills and plains may experience light rain during this period.
The IMD has cautioned travelers and residents about potential disruptions due to slippery roads, reduced visibility, and traffic congestion. People are advised to drive carefully, adhere to traffic advisories, and limit outdoor activities during snowfall to avoid risks associated with frostbite or hypothermia. Warm, layered clothing is recommended to counter the chill.
Maximum temperatures in the region are expected to drop by 4-5°C starting January 22, with minimum temperatures falling by 2-3°C in subsequent days. Cold day conditions are anticipated on January 23, particularly in areas like Shimla, Mandi, and Kangra.
Tourists planning to visit Himachal Pradesh during this period should stay updated with real-time weather forecasts by visiting the IMD Shimla website or following its social media updates. While the snowfall promises a scenic winter experience, preparedness and caution will ensure safety during this period.
